5-3 September 6, 2019

Hello!  My name is Ms. Leavitt, and I am the homeroom teacher for 5-3.  I also teach grade 5  drama and all grade 5 students English Language Arts.  This blog should update you weekly on what's happening in 5-3's core subjects.

SCIENCE
I had a great week getting to know the grade 5 students and am excited for spending the next year together.  Out first unit will be wetlands and we will learn the importance of wetlands in Alberta and learn about some species that live in the wetlands.  This week, the students started working on their title page. -Mme Richard

ELA

We are currently writing super short 5 sentence summer stories.  We are reviewing plot and complex sentence structure and will soon illustrate our stories.  Students should read 20 minutes in English everyday for homework.  Students will have other homework in ELA, on occasion, if they don't use class time well, or have to prepare for a presentation.  -Ms. Leavitt

FLA

Bonjour grade 5s! It will be my pleasure to teach French LAnguage Arts to you this year. You can click on the Course outline FLA 5 to find all the information about what we will be learning this year in FLA. This week, we started slowly by getting to know each other, we talked about our class routines and reviewed some French expressions. -Mme. Turcotte

Math
My name is Johanne Poirier and I am teaching class 5.3 Math.  After just 4 days of school, students had the opportunity to meet with friends, review some grade 4 knowledge from last year and meet their new teachers.
In Math, students are expected to speak French in class at all time. You will notice that Social studies, Sciences and French Language Art teachers will ask for the same expectation. This is your kid's first challenge of the year.  All year long, I will be there to help students in any of their school challenges.
Each student will receive Textbooks in Math.  We will ask students to cover the Math textbook with strong paper (not just a book sock).  They will get there Math textbook around mid-September.
In Math, students will have homework every day from Monday to Thursday (never on weekend).
SS
Bienvenue to David Thompson grade 5s! It will also be my pleasure to be your social studies teacher this year. You can click on the  Course Outline 5 SS to find all the information about what we will be studying in Social Studies this year. This week, we started slowly by getting to know each other, we talked about our class routines and reviewed the geography of our country. -Mme. Turcotte
